Theo van Boven
Theo van Boven was one of the first diplomats to make human rights his main concern. In 1977 he was appointed Director of the UN Division for Human Rights in Geneva. His outspoken defence of victims of human rights violations in any part of the world forced him to resign in 1982 and earned him an enduring reputation in the human rights world. He became the first Registrar of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and was UN Special Rapporteur against Torture from 2001-2004. He has written extensively on international human rights and humanitarian law; he held a chair in international law at Maastricht University, he was a visiting professor at law schools and continues to be active in a variety of NGOs.
