List of Patrons

At the end of 2004 Board and Jury approved the idea of creating a list of Patrons and during 2005 the first seven were approached and agreed to serve as such. Their role is to give support to the MEA efforts in promotion, media outreach and fundraising. They are in alphabetical order:

  • Theo van Boven – Netherlands, former Director Human Rights Division of the UN and former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture.
  • Leandro Despouy – President of the Auditoría General de la Nación Argentina, UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers.
  • Adama Dieng – Senegal, UN ASG, Registrar Rwanda Tribunal, former Secretary General of ICJ and first Chairman of the MEF.
  • Robert Fulghum – USA, author and human rights supporter.
  • Barbara Hendricks – Sweden, classical and jazz singer, human rights activist, Good will Ambassador for Life to UNHCR and President of Barbara Hendricks Foundation for Peace and Reconciliation.
  • Asma Jahangir – Pakistan, human rights lawyer, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Laureate MEA 1995.
  • José Ramos-Horta – Nobel Prize Laureate, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of East Timor.
