Since the early 1970 Dick Oosting has worked on behalf of human rights and refugees. He coordinated Amnesty International’s first worldwide campaign against torture (an activity highlighted in Amnesty’s Nobel Peace Prize citation in 1977), served five years as the organization’s Deputy Secretary General (working closely with Martin Ennals as Secretary General), and then returned to the Netherlands to head its Dutch national section. He has directed various other organizations including the Dutch Refugee Council and several Brussels-based operations before returning to London where he recently stepped down as CEO of the European Council on Foreign Relations. He continues to serve on the boards of several human rights NGOs.
